Fix my speaker

Phone sounds muffled, quiet or wrong? Step one is free and takes 45 seconds: hold the speaker down and press Start. If it was water, that is the fix. If not, the checklist below finds it.

Hold the phone speaker-down. Volume to maximum. Silent switch off.

The fix-my-speaker checklist, in order

Work down the list. Each step is quicker than the one after it, and each one is a real reason a phone speaker sounds wrong.

  1. Was it wet? Rain, sink, shower, a glass knocked over. If yes, run the tone above with the wet speaker facing the floor. Muffled-after-water clears in one to three runs.
  2. Where is the sound going? Open Control Center and long-press the audio card. If it says AirPods, a car, or a speaker, that is your problem. Toggle Bluetooth off to be sure.
  3. Silent switch and volume. On iPhone, orange showing on the side switch means no web audio and no ringtone. Then hold volume-up while a video plays — the ringer volume and the media volume are separate.
  4. The case. Thick cases with a small speaker cut-out muffle the bottom speaker more than people expect. Take it off, play a song, compare.
  5. Settings that quietly turn things down. Reduce Loud Audio (Sounds & Haptics → Headphone Safety), the balance slider (Accessibility → Audio & Visual), the EQ preset (Music). Any of these can make a good speaker sound half-dead.
  6. The grille. Torch on the holes. Grey fluff means lint: soft dry toothbrush across the holes, Blu-Tack pressed on and peeled off. Full routine here.
  7. Restart. Audio routing does get stuck. Hold the side and volume buttons, slide to power off, wait ten seconds.
  8. Test properly. One song you know, half volume then full, in Music, YouTube and a call. If only one app is wrong, it is the app.

When it is the speaker itself

After all of that, a speaker that is still crackly, buzzy on bass notes, or cutting in and out has a damaged diaphragm or debris on the cone. No tone or brush reaches that. The good news is it is a module that unplugs from the board, and an independent shop swaps it in under an hour for less than the price of a case. If the speaker is fine and it is the charging port that is wet, sound will not help — the port has nothing to vibrate. Unplug, tap it port-down, and give it time.

How can I fix my speaker for free?
Start with the tool above: it clears water, which is the most common cause of a suddenly muffled speaker, and it costs nothing. Most “broken” phone speakers are one of these.
Why is my speaker not working at all?
No sound at all, rather than quiet sound, is usually routing: the phone thinks it is connected to headphones or a Bluetooth device. Check Control Center, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and restart. If the earpiece works on a call but the bottom speaker is silent everywhere, the bottom speaker itself has failed and needs replacing.
How do I fix my iPhone sound after water?
Remove headphones, silent switch to ring, volume to maximum, hold the wet speaker facing down and press Start above. Let the 165 Hz tone run for 45 seconds, then test with a song. Can I fix my speaker dust problem with sound?

My speaker crackles. Can it be fixed?
Crackling right after the phone got wet is water on the diaphragm — run the tone, then let it dry. Crackling on a dry phone at high volume, in every app, is a torn diaphragm or debris on the cone, and the speaker module needs replacing. That is a $59–$89 job at most independent shops.
