iPhone: the three things that stop the tone
- Silent switch. Orange showing means Safari’s audio is muted. Flip it to ring before pressing Start.
- Connected AirPods. If AirPods or any Bluetooth speaker is connected, the tone plays there, not from the iPhone. Open Control Center and switch audio output to iPhone, or put the AirPods in their case.
- Low volume. Press the volume-up button until the bar is full. The tone needs to move the speaker hard.
Top speaker or bottom speaker?
- Bottom speaker — the grille beside the charging port. Music, videos, ringtones and speakerphone. Hold the phone upright, port facing the floor.
- Top speaker (ear speaker / earpiece) — the thin slot above the screen. Phone calls sound muffled but music is fine. Hold the phone screen-down, top edge angled at the floor.
Run the tone once for each if you are not sure. Both play at the same time anyway; the orientation is what changes. The same holds for the ear speaker on Samsung, Pixel and other Android phones.
Muffled, crackling or distorted?
Three symptoms, three causes. Muffled after water is trapped water — the tone clears it. Crackling right after a spill is water on the diaphragm, and it usually goes with the second or third run; crackling on a phone that never got wet is debris or a torn cone. Distorted in one app only is software — restart and check the app’s EQ; distorted everywhere on a dry phone means the speaker is failing. Run the tone first in every case: it is free and takes 45 seconds, and most “broken” iPhone speakers after a spill are just wet.
Shortcut, YouTube video, or this?
All three play a similar tone. The differences are practical: a Shortcut has to be found, installed and trusted, and shared iCloud links keep dying. A YouTube video carries ads, the frequency is compressed, and someone can upload anything under that title. This page generates the tone itself, in Safari, with a 165 Hz fundamental, with nothing to install.
Does this really work?
Yes, for water in the speaker — and it is the same trick your smartwatch uses. A speaker is a paper-thin diaphragm on a coil. At 165 Hz the diaphragm of a phone speaker moves close to its largest excursion, so each cycle gives the water droplets sitting in the mesh a physical shove. Water only stays in the grille because of surface tension; a few hundred shoves a second break it, and the droplets get pushed out through the holes. Hold the speaker facing down and gravity finishes the job.
Apple Watch’s Water Lock does exactly this — it plays a tone and you can watch the droplets leave the grille. Samsung Galaxy Watch and several Android phones (OnePlus, Xiaomi) ship the same feature under “speaker cleaner”. This page just gives every phone the button.
What it does not do
- Charging port. Sound does nothing there — the port has no diaphragm. Playing a tone over a “liquid detected” warning is wasted time. What actually works for the port.
- Dust and lint. Loose dust may fall out during a run, but compacted pocket lint does not. For that, a soft dry toothbrush or a piece of Blu-Tack pressed gently on the grille beats any sound.
- A blown speaker. If the sound is crackly and quiet without the phone ever getting wet, the voice coil is damaged. No tone fixes hardware.
Why this and not an app
The tone is generated by your browser’s Web Audio API with a 165 Hz fundamental — not a compressed MP3. It is deliberately not a bare sine: a phone speaker can barely reproduce a lone 165 Hz sine, so the wave carries its odd harmonics too, which is what makes it loud enough to matter while 165 Hz stays the strongest component. There is no app to install, no account, no subscription and no ads. Google Analytics counts page visits; what you do with the tool never leaves your device. It is free because there is nothing to sell.
Do not run the tone over and over on a speaker that is already dry. Pushing a dry diaphragm at full volume for minutes on end can loosen the voice coil and leave a permanent rattle. Three runs, then let it air-dry.
