iPhone top speaker cleaner

The earpiece is the speaker everyone forgets. If calls sound muffled while music is fine, hold the phone screen-down with the top edge toward the floor and press Start — the tone clears the slot the same way it clears the bottom speaker.

Top speaker, upper speaker, earpiece: one part, five names

The thin slot above the screen is the earpiece. Apple calls it the receiver; people call it the top speaker, the upper speaker or the ear speaker. It carries phone calls and, since the iPhone 7, the top channel of stereo sound. It gets wet from rain and sweat and the shower, it fills with lint from pockets and make-up from cheeks, and it is exactly where the edge of a screen protector lands.

The symptom is specific: calls sound distant, music sounds fine. If music is muffled too, it is the bottom speaker, and the main tool page is the one you want.

How to run the tone on the top speaker

  1. Check the screen protector first. Torch on the slot. If the protector’s edge covers any of it, that is the problem, and no tone or cleaning will fix it. Trim it or fit one with a proper cut-out.
  2. Headphones out, Bluetooth off. Same as always.
  3. Silent switch to ring, volume up.
  4. Screen down, top edge toward the floor. Hold the phone face-down at an angle so the earpiece slot points at a towel. This is the step that is different from the bottom speaker; the tone plays through both, and gravity only helps the one facing down.
  5. Press Start. The earpiece run sounds quieter than a bottom-speaker run because the driver is smaller. That is normal.
  6. Test with a call. Ring a voicemail or a friend. A song plays mostly through the bottom speaker and will tell you nothing about the earpiece.

If it is lint, not water

A slot that got quieter over months, on a phone that has not been wet, is blocked with lint and skin, and the tone will not clear it. Press a small piece of Blu-Tack along the slot, hold for a second, peel it off and look at what came with it. Repeat with a clean face of the putty until it comes away clean. Then a soft dry toothbrush along the slot, never across it, and never anything pointed — the mesh behind the earpiece is closer to the surface than the bottom speaker’s and tears more easily. Android phones have the same earpiece in the same place. The hold and the test are identical; only the silent switch line does not apply.

Top speaker cleaner — questions people ask

How do I clean the top speaker on my iPhone?
For water: hold the phone screen-down with the top edge angled at the floor and press Start above — the 165 Hz tone plays through the earpiece and gravity pulls the droplets out of the slot. For lint: press a small piece of Blu-Tack along the slot and peel it off, then brush along (not across) the slot with a soft dry toothbrush. And check the screen protector is not overlapping the slot; that is the cause more often than either.
Why are calls muffled but music is fine?
Because they use different speakers. Calls come through the earpiece at the top; music uses mainly the bottom speaker beside the port. If only calls sound distant, the top speaker is the one that is wet or blocked. Run the tone with the phone screen-down, then make a test call — playing a song will not tell you anything.
Does the tone play through the top speaker?
Yes. Every iPhone since the 7 plays media through both speakers in stereo, and the tone is media. The bottom speaker is louder, which is why the earpiece run sounds quieter than a bottom-speaker run — that is normal. The orientation is what directs the water: whichever speaker faces the floor is the one gravity helps.
What is the upper speaker on an iPhone?
The same thing as the top speaker, the ear speaker, the earpiece and the receiver — five names for the thin slot above the screen. It carries phone calls, FaceTime audio when the phone is at your ear, and the top channel of stereo playback. It also sits right where a screen protector edge lands, and where sweat and make-up collect.
Will the tone damage the earpiece?
No. It plays at the same level as a speakerphone call and stops after 45 seconds. The earpiece driver is smaller than the bottom one, so keep to the same rule: three runs, then let it air-dry for half an hour before trying again.
The top speaker is still quiet after cleaning and the tone.
Test with a call, not music, and with the screen protector off if it overlaps the slot. If a call is still distant on a dry, clean phone, the earpiece module is damaged. It is a separate part from the bottom speaker and a routine repair at an independent shop; Apple will usually replace the whole phone instead, which is why the cost guide tells you to get both quotes.
